A woman was killed in a devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 290 in Northborough, Massachusetts, late Wednesday night, after a head-on collision caused both vehicles to burst into flames, according to authorities.
The fatal crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. on June 24, 2026, on the eastbound side of Interstate 290 near Exit 27 (Hudson Street/Solomon Pond Road). Emergency crews from the Northborough Fire Department responded after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a serious collision involving a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered a Subaru and a Jeep fully engulfed in flames with extensive front-end damage. One of the vehicles had overturned onto its side as firefighters and police officers worked urgently to extinguish the blaze.
According to the Northborough Fire Department, the driver and sole occupant of one vehicle managed to escape before emergency personnel arrived. That individual was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Tragically, the driver of the second vehicle, identified by investigators as the wrong-way driver, was unable to be rescued despite what officials described as the “valiant efforts” of first responders. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released her identity pending notification of family members.
Firefighters reportedly used approximately 2,000 gallons of water to extinguish the intense vehicle fires. Following the on-scene investigation, rescue crews spent nearly an hour utilizing hydraulic equipment to recover the victim from the wreckage.
The crash forced the closure of I-290 East at Exit 24 (Church Street) for several hours as investigators processed the scene and crews cleared debris. The roadway was reopened shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday.
The fatal collision remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the wrong-way driver entering the highway and causing the fiery head-on crash.
The tragedy marks yet another wrong-way crash in Massachusetts, renewing concerns about highway safety and ongoing efforts by state officials to enhance roadway signage and implement technology designed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
